Exploring with Lani: Sustainable Construction
Welcome to Exploring with Lani – a space where I share my learnings and thoughts in my own little corner of the world. In this segment, I explored:
Embracing Sustainable Construction for a Greener Tomorrow
My connection to nature and passion for the environment has led me to the topic of sustainable construction.
I would love to imagine a world where we find buildings that are not just structures but living organisms, breathing with the rhythm of nature everywhere we go.
Sustainable buildings are not just a change in construction methods; it's a revolution in mindset. It's a testament to the belief that we can redefine our relationship with the environment, creating homes and spaces that are not just shelters but stewards of the Earth.
I do want to revisit this segment to provide more valuable insights and examples. However, here are some key sustainable practices that are essential for achieving the goal of a greener tomorrow:
Energy Efficiency:
Buildings account for a significant portion of global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
Sustainable buildings focus on energy-efficient design, utilising technologies such as high-performance insulation, energy-efficient windows, and renewable energy sources like solar panels.
Green Materials:
Sustainable construction emphasises the use of eco-friendly materials, including recycled, reclaimed, or rapidly renewable resources.
Water Conservation:
Sustainable buildings incorporate water-saving features like low-flow faucets, rainwater harvesting systems, and the recycling of greywater.
Green Roofs: (My favourite!)
Covered with vegetation, green roofs help reduce stormwater runoff and lessen the urban heat island effect.
Bonus: They provide additional green space, bringing nature into an urban setting.
Adaptive Reuse:
It's all about giving existing structures a new purpose instead of bulldozing them. This not only saves resources but also preserves historical and architectural gems.
I also wanted to share a bamboo building course that I found in Bali, Indonesia. It's operated by a renowned design firm called IBUKU and is located just two minutes from the all-bamboo campus at Green School Bali. They have been pioneering bamboo architecture for over 10 years and are now sharing their expertise in bamboo design and sustainable architecture.
Recently, they've moved their bamboo courses online, making it more accessible to people around the world. Their goal is to continue growing the bamboo movement and provide individuals with the knowledge and skills to build their own bamboo structures! You should definitely check it out.
I’ve included some images below to showcase some sustainable and beautiful builds.
